Waigaoqiao shipbuilder delivers its third 20,000 TEU container ship

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co delivered its third 20,000 TEU container ship Sagittarius to Cosco Shipping Lines Co recently.

So far, Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co has finished building and delivered 13 ships to Cosco this year, with a total of 3.196 million dead weight tons carrying capacity. Thus, Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co has become the country’s first shipbuilder to finish building ships with the carrying capacity exceeding 300 million dead weight tons this year.

Co-designed by Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and the No. 708 research institute affiliated to the China State Shipbuilding Corporation, the Sagittarius registers 399.8 meters in length, 58.6 meters in width and 73 meters in height. It has a maximum draft of 16 meters and a maximum load of 20,000 TEU. It can travel at 22.5 nautical miles per hour and its deck area can fit almost four football fields.

The ship is also equipped with a big diameter propeller, energy-efficient full balanced rudder, and super long stroke engine to maximally reduce the ship’s oil consumption during sailing.

The Sagittarius is Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co’s latest 20,000 TEU ships delivered to COSCO after “Tarius” and “Virgo”.

So far, Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co has named and delivered 435 ships to their customers from a dozen countries and regions of Asia, Europe and America.
