Shanghai Waigaoqiao shipbuilder delivers a 20,000-TEU container ship

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co (SWS) has just finished building the ultra-large 20,000-TEU container ship Cosco Shipping Virgo and delivered it to Cosco Container Lines Co on May 29.

The Cosco Shipping Virgo is the second 20,000-TEU container ship built by SWS after the Taurus, a national key innovation project and the largest container ship built by SWS early this year. The Virgo will be later used on Cosco’s Far East-Europe route, helping Cosco become a world-class container lines company.

The vessel is 400 meters long and 73 meters in depth and has a maximum load of 200,000 tons. It has a deck area as large as four football fields and it can travel at a maximum speed of 22.5 nautical miles per hour. Also, it has 1,000 refrigerated container sockets.

The ship was jointly designed by the 708 Research Institute of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and SWS and a high-end project jointly launched by CSSC and China Cosco Shipping Corporation Limited.
