Yangshan port the first in the world to report an annual throughput of 40 million TEUs

The phase four automated container terminal of Shanghai Yangshan Deep-water Port unloaded its 40 millionth container on December 29, 2017, making it the first in the world to report an annual throughput of more than 40 million TEUs.

The port has secured its leading position in the world for eight consecutive years. However it has continued to reform and changed it from just a loading dock to a service provider to facilitate Shanghai’s goal of building an international shipping center by 2020.

Since the second half of 2017, the port has reached a daily average container throughput of 113,000 TEUs. Next, the port will improve its business environment, loading efficiency, and accuracy of the ships’ arrival and departure time. The port will further coordinate its resources, optimize the sailing routes, deepen the cooperation with other shipping companies, said an official with Shanghai International Port (Group) Co Ltd.

More efforts will be made to better the operation of the port and its services according to the directions of the Yangtze River Economic Belt Shipping Alliance. The port also needs to advance its informatization, and strive to be a leading port of intelligence, eco-friendliness, technology, and efficiency.
