First foreign-invested hospital opens in FTZ

Shanghai Artemed Hospital, the first foreign-invested facility of its kind in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, has officially started running in Waigaoqiao of the Pudong New Area, a culmination of several years of preparation.

The hospital has an international distant consultation center, allowing patients to talk to corresponding professionals without having to go abroad.

Top tumor diagnosis and radiotherapy equipment will be brought in later.

The hospital is also covered by both medical insurance and commercial insurance with a new kind of payment system on the cards.

Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG), which charges patients up to a certain limit for a single disease while the remaining is undertaken by the hospital, may be introduced to make the medical process more efficient.

For the first phase the hospital has 200 beds and six operation rooms, featuring especially tumor and bone treatment.

Its trial period will last for three months, with more departments like the outpatients, emergency and inpatients units gradually becoming available.
